Historical Landmarks Commission

Overview

The Historic Landmarks Commission (HLC) advises the City Council on historic preservation by recommending staff and consultants, defining historic district boundaries, and designating landmarks. It reviews development code changes affecting historic properties, conducts public hearings for National Register nominations, and maintains a public inventory of historic sites. The HLC monitors actions affecting landmarks, creates subcommittees, and maintains detailed meeting records. It promotes public awareness through education programs, reviews landscape, parking, signage plans, and certificates of appropriateness to ensure compliance with design guidelines. The commission holds annual strategic planning, recommends funding and acquisition of endangered landmarks, proposes owner incentives, and manages preservation-related donations to support the city’s historic preservation goals.

Commission Membership

  • The commission consists of seven members, appointed by the City Council.
  • Members serve two-year terms and may continue to serve until a successor is appointed.
  • The City Council may re-appoint HLC members as their terms expire, not to exceed ten consecutive years. The mayor shall fill any vacancies that may occur before a term has expired only for the remainder of the term.

For more information about serving or upcoming meetings, please contact the Historic Preservation Officer at 903-731-8402.
